Territory Laboratory: Design Methodological Tool and Experimentation For Learning In Situated Contexts
The evolution of education has generated new ideas about how to learn. According to Smith (2023), it is crucial to explore learning and practice, especially today where access to high technology in Latin America is unlimited, therefore, the craft process can offer solutions to contemporary social problems (Eslava, 2005). This study introduces an artisanal process for learning in design, promoting creativity and openness through an experiential learning methodology, DIY (Do It Yourself) and Material Driven Design (MDD), which integrates local practices. It was conducted in two stages through the participation of a group of architecture students from the Universidad Michoacana. The first stage introduced the recognition of craft techniques in a controlled environment within the classroom; the second stage involved the practice of artisans in the field in their workshops. The results show the interconnection between design, learning and craftsmanship. Highlighting the value of tradition in education with contemporary design.
