Alloplex Bioaffective Worlds Xr ‘Hydnum’
This paper introduces "Hydnum", an Extended Reality (XR) interactive study that immerses users in a multisensory continuum of scent, music, form, space, and light. "Hydnum", named after a genus of fungi known for its distinctive scent and geometric mycelial networks, explores the integration of human biodata with virtual and physical elements to modulate emotional and sensory experiences. Utilizing James Russell’s Circumplex Model of Affect, the study extends these emotional frameworks into transmodal worldmaking. Despite historical challenges and philosophical skepticism towards olfactory media, "Hydnum" leverages biosignal processing and transformations to engage underutilized senses, offering a transformative approach to sensory interaction in biodigital architecture. The project’s modular scent system and cyber-physical artifacts dynamically respond to users' biodata, exploring new avenues for architectural and experiential design.
