Beyond Surface

The contribution discusses the process and outcomes of the speculative design-research project Beyond Surface, which aims to make connections between generative AI and digital fabrication through digital-physical design loops. The project establishes a comprehensive workflow where AI-generated 2D images are transformed into 3D models and ultimately implemented through digital fabrication. Beyond Surface incorporates nature-inspired forms and patterns to explore spatial possibilities informed by advanced modes of digital representation. These spatial possibilities are refined and converged into fundamental architectural elements of architecture, allowing for the creation of drawing types like floor plans, elevations, and sections. Beyond Surface envisions a fusion of biological insights, digital innovation, and AI-assisted creation. This approach expands creative expression and redefines the digital-physical boundary in contemporary design thinking while emphasizing architects' control over AI-driven workflows.
