Assessing The Use of Ai-Generated Images In Architecture: An Experience With An Architectural Firm

This study investigates the use of AI-generated images in the architectural design process at the Sao Paulo Studio of a global architecture firm. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research involved an initial survey, an in-office workshop with the AI tool Midjourney, and a follow-up survey. Findings showed significant interest in AI, with 81% of participants aspiring to include AI in their workflows despite limited experience. The workshop highlighted AI's potential in conceptual design but underscored challenges in creating effective text prompts and the need for human oversight. Participants noted AI’s ability to enhance creativity in preliminary design but raised concerns about data security, copyright issues, and maintaining architectural integrity. The study highlights the essential need for ongoing training, robust data management protocols, and ensuring that the architect's vision directs AI use, positioning AI as an augmentative tool within the architectural workflow.
