“Mapas Project” and Its Innovative Methodology For Planning In Urban Context Using Automated Tessellation Built Into A Digital Platform
This paper presents the MAPAS Project (Mapping, Analysis, Forecasting, and Sustainable Actions), a collaborative endeavor involving VLI Multimodal S.A., the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais (IFMG). By leveraging the capabilities of computer programming, data science, and diagrammatic design, MAPAS seeks to address the challenges posed by precarious informal settlements, environmental degradation, and safety concerns in railway corridors. The primary goal is to formulate urban and architectural strategies that bolster community safety and mitigate operational risks associated with railway assets and cargo transport. The methodology encompasses a design process that integrates the development of multi-criteria analysis indices with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), incorporates a versatile, re-usable design catalogue, and functions within a digital platform. The study discusses the MAPAS potential for enhancing synergies between the fields of Computer Science, Architecture, and Urbanism, alongside education, research, university outreach, and technological innovation.
