Ai-Aided Fabrication: Transforming Digital Manufacturing
This paper explores the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence-aided Fabrication (AAF) in digital manufacturing, with a focus on creating organic forms. We present an overview of emerging AAF systems and methodologies, including their core principles and limitations. The integration of AI/Machine Learning algorithms into fabrication processes like additive manufacturing is analysed, particularly with the help of Deep learning methods like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). A case study demonstrates the design and 3D-printing of a lamp with an organic form inspired by fungi, achieved through a CNN trained on natural forms. This highlights how AAF optimizes design, material selection, and production. Our findings suggest AAF empowers designers and manufacturers, unlocking new possibilities for innovation, especially in organic design. We discuss the future directions of AAF and its impact on design-to-production workflows.
